The Torture Colony This is the story of Paul Schaefer, a one-eyed German paedophile, who set up a utopian religious community in a remote part of Chile. He called the place Colonia Dignidad, or 'dignity colony', but there wasn't much dignity going around. Not only was life in the community fearful and repressive, but the colony soon started operating as an outsourced torture site for the murderous Pinochet regime. This was a place where Pinochet´s opponents were 'disappeared'. LESS

The battle For Ballalae For many years, the relics of World War II littered the jungles and beaches of the South Pacific. But now, a lot of those relics are vanishing, not just to time and tide—but to collectors. There's a big and lucrative market, especially, for the last of the Pacific warplanes. A new war is being fought over what's left of these old battlefields, a fight between the people who want to salvage and restore the warplanes and those who say they should now be left where they are. Swindled: the dark history of food fraud The world was scandalised recently when news broke that milk adulterated with the toxic chemical melamine had killed four and poisoned many thousands of Chinese babies. This week, the US issued a nationwide 'import alert' for Chinese-made food products. Bee Wilson was not surprised by the scandal. She says, 'being cheated over food is one of the most universal human experiences.' LESS

Somalia update Things are going from bad to worse in Somalia, a country racked by chaos for 17 years. Just days ago, the president admitted that the Somali government is on the 'verge of total collapse.' Islamist extremists have been steadily seizing control of port cities around the country and are now only miles away from the capital Mogadishu. And last month a 13-year-old girl was stoned to death for adultery after complaining she was raped by three men. And the seas around the country are now the most treacherous in the world: bands of Somali pirates have attacked over 85 ships this year – last weekend a massive Saudi oil tanker was seized and is currently being held for ransom. Paul Stiles: the market as God Paul Stiles has worked for the US Navy, the National Security Agency, and in the bear pit, trading bonds at Merrill Lynch. Then, still only in his 40s, he walked away from it all to live on a Spanish island. The Far Right in Europe post Haider A discussion on the state of the radical right in Europe following the death of the influential and charismatic Austrian leader, Jorg Haider. Miriam Makeba Last Sunday, after performing at a concert in Italy, the singer known as Mama Africa, collapsed and later died in hospital. She often told her family, "I will sing until the last day of my life." She was true to her word. And Mama Africa was more than a singer and performer. She was a political activist right to the end. At 76 years old, her last performance was at an anti-racism and anti-organised crime concert in support of writer, Robert Saviano who wrote "Gomorra", a book about organised crime in southern Italy. On Wednesday, Makeba's body was returned to South Africa. LESS

Keynes and the Financial Meltdown In recent months, the obsession in the global media is now the "world after capitalism". One of the dead economists constantly quoted in almost every article on the financial meltdown is John Maynard Keynes. Curiously, his arguments are often quoted by both those who think the market can fix everything and by those who want the government to solve every problem. Surviving the Khmer Rouge For four years the Khmer Rouge starved and murdered the people of Cambodia. When the Vietnamese liberated Cambodia in 1979, two of the leaders - Pol Pot and Ieng Sary - were trialled in absentia and condemned to death. Subsequently they were pardoned. Almost thirty years later, Ineg Sary and four other senior Khmer Rouge members are to stand trial on charges of crimes against humanity. Denise Affonco survived the four years and testified in the 1979 trials. From her testimony she has produced her account of life under the Khmer Rouge. LESS
