Comic Book Outsiders Episode 74

In this episode Scott and Steve discuss a lot of news from the last couple of weeks covering comic announcements, new TV, new online role playing MMO games, and comic conventions, both in the US and here in the UK. In a Challenge Everyone section, they discuss Logicomix - The Search for Truth, a graphic novel about Bertrand Russell and his life. Steve pitches a fairly new TV show to Scott, one that has been around for a couple of years but he has only just caught up on, and Scott pitches a brand new TV series that has only just started airing in the US and will be showing in the UK in the next couple of weeks. Don't forget, in Episode 76 we will be discussing our latest book club selection, The Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov, and we will announce the next selection in that episode. There is still time to pick up a copy and send us your thoughts and comments on the book. If you would like to suggest a future book selection you can get in touch with us and get involved in the discussion. All contact links are available on the website www.comicbookoutsiders.com In this episode Steve also announces a new venture, a book review website. In between book club selections Steve is always reading books, so he will be periodically posting spoiler free reviews of other genre books on his review blog www.stevesfantasybookreviews.blogspot.com. Despite the name it will not just be fantasy books, but also sci-fi, urban fantasy, thrillers and cross genre books.

In this episode Scott and Steve kick off with some news and reviews, looking at movies based on comics and how the two biggest comic companies are dealing with them, we look at some forthcoming movie releases, news of an odd decision by a cinema chain regarding a new release, and also some comic news from an unusual source. For our main feature we discuss a new TV show, Caprica, which is a spin off prequel to the newly imagined BattleStar Galactica. That might sound confusing already but this show was always meant to be different, more of a drama than a sci-fi space show, and a more open and engaging programme to attract a wider audience beyond genre fans and what has been previously described as a male dominated audience for BSG. The pilot came out last year and now four or five episodes have aired. Scott and Steve discuss what they like and dislike about the show. Don’t forget our current book club selection is The Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov, and we will be talking about it in 5 episodes time in Episode 77. It’s a very short book so if you’ve already read it and want to get involved, send us your comments and we’ll try to include as many of them as we can when we discuss the book. You can suggest a future book club selection by getting in touch with us or posting on our forum. All links are on the website www.comicbookoutsiders.com

Welcome to the first CBO episode of 2010! Over the Christmas holidays both Scott and Steve have been busy relaxing and eating far too much food and then sitting for long periods of time wondering why they ate so much. However it did give them both ample time to watch a lot of movies, read a lot of comics and watch DVDs.We start off this episode with only a small slice of news, that still manages to go on for a while. For the next few episodes we will continue to cover some news and reviews from the last month. For our main feature we have an interview with Chris Lynch, the co-creator of Monkeys With Machineguns. He has a new graphic novel called The Dark coming out from Markosia this March and we discuss where his interest in comics started, forthcoming projects and The Dark which is currently in previews.Just a quick reminder, our current book club selection is Empire in Black and Gold by Adrian Tchaikovsky and we will be interviewing the author in about two and a half weeks. So if you have read the book and want to send in any questions, get in touch and we will try to ask Adrian as many of your questions as possible at the end of this month.

After some news and reviews we get into our discussion of the current book club selection, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. This seems to be a book that has divided opinions, and a few listeners found it difficult to get into, but there are a lot of interesting themes to discuss which we dive into. With feedback and comments from listeners we get into the meat of what the book is about and then announce our next book club selection. For those who have not read The Handmaid's Tale, but do not want it spoiled for them and want to take part in the next round of our book club, jump to time stamp 1h-18m-51s where I announce the new selection which is Empire in Black and Gold by Adrian Tchaikovsky. So towards the end of January, which gives people about seven weeks, we will be talking about the new book and Adrian has very kindly agreed to come on the show for an interview and to answer questions from our listeners. So, pick up a copy, send us your comments, questions for Adrian and join the book club.

In this bumper episode Steve and Scott start with some news, mostly about James Cameron's and Felicia Day's respective Avatars. Then they embark on a discussion about censorship. How has it been done in comics in the past? Is it always a bad thing, or are there times when some level of censorship is appropriate? Let us know your thoughts. Finally they discuss a Hidden Gem. The miniseries V from 1983, created by Kenneth Johnson, it's an epic story following the human resistance in the aftermath of an alien invasion. Some of the audio quality isn't great in this episode, but by episode 57 Scott will be back in England so things should be cleared up.

There is a lot of new cop, medical and legal dramas starting up, none of which we talk about as they don't interest us! We focus on the interesting genre stuff and sift the wheat from the chaff. After that it's our second book club selection and this episode we're talking about Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, a significant sci-fi book published in the 1950s. We talk about its relevance today, how eerily accurate it is, and why we think it is such an important book. We also have feedback and input from listeners and then we announce what the next Book Club selection will be.

In this episode we start with some news and reviews and then begin the first part of our discussion about comic book companies. With over thirty comic companies it is sometimes very difficult to know where to start for new readers. There are no obvious labels about what genres of comics different publishers produce, so in an attempt to make it a bit easier for new readers, or those interested in a particular genre, we start with a guide to some of them. This episode we talk about Top Shelf Productions, Icon, Dark Horse, Vertigo and Red 5 comics. And of course during the episode I completely forgot to mention Rex Mundi or Star Wars comics when talking about Dark Horse comics. We then get into a lengthy discussion about remakes. Are they a good thing or not? With the end of TV shows such as BattleStar Galactica, and news on the horizon of other remakes and reimagings, we look at what has come before and what is planned for the future. As always we appreciate your feedback and comments on this show and the topics we discuss.

In the second of our new format episodes we have two segments to this show, What If...where we have a lengthy discussion about the repercussions of a TV show not being cancelled. This is in terms of the show itself and the wider scope of TV in general and this episode we talk about Firefly. Our second segment is the familiar Hidden Gem where we talk about the classic 1981 film Excalibur. As ever if you want to get in touch about anything we've talked about in this episode you can email us individually at steve@comicbookoutsiders.com or scott@comicbookoutsiders.com. Bringing you some of the very best hidden gems from the world of independent comics, movies and TV. Jumping out of the gate for our 26th episode is a new slimmed down version of Comic Book Outsiders. We're still going to be giving you the same great content (plus more bonus features) but we're going to break it down into smaller segments delivered to your media player more often. In this episode we start with some news including a brief recap of the Birmingham Comic Convention, discuss via a few tangents the release of Hulk in DVD and Blu-Ray, the new Captain America film, Fringe and look forward to the upcoming Leeds convention. In our Main Feature the gloves come off and we tackle the thorny Trades vs Single Issues debate. In Challenge Scott we don't talk about any new comics but Scott and Steve discuss in depth Hawaiian Dick, written by B. Clay Moore and brilliantly drawn by Steven Griffin. If you want to get in touch about anything we've talked about in this episode you can email us individually at our new addresses steve@comicbookoutsiders.com or scott@comicbookoutsiders.com. As usual you can leave us a review at our myspace, facebook, and libsyn pages, or leave us an iTunes review.

This short bonus episode includes some of our mistakes that get removed in the editing process, as well as some mistakes from Babylon 5, plus I conduct an interview with an alien and it doesn't go well and we round it off with a song, thankfully not sung by either Scott or myself.

Bringing you some of the very best hidden gems from the world of independent comics, movies and TV.In this landmark episode Scott is still away on his international travels so I have another guest co-host who will be familiar to long-time listeners as we interviewed him in a previous episode. In this episode our Main Feature is an interview with Si Spurrier, the creator of Gutsville from Image Comics. He has also written for 2000AD, and more recently Marvel comics on titles such as Silver Surfer, Wolverine and Ghost Rider.Instead of a Challenge segment we have a general news and reviews section where we discuss stories that have caught our interest and we still end up with 3 comic pitches in this segment. It's my co-host's turn to step into the confessional for the Guilty Pleasure section, and it is one from a long list of many that he wants to get off his chest. Our final section as always is the Hidden Gem segment and this episode we're talking about the film Stardust. This episode brings a few new changes with a new website, new email addresses and logo, a real CBO facelift to mark out 25th episode. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to get the show this far, and thanks this episode go out to everyone who sent in their best wishes. If you want to get in touch about anything we've talked about in this episode you can email us individually at our new addresses steve@comicbookoutsiders.com or scott@comicbookoutsiders.com. In our Main Feature we talk about sci-fi and comedy in TV and film, does it work and what are some of our favourites? Then it's a Challenge Scott retrospective where we talk about some of the books that I've recommended to Scott over the last year and a bit and how it has changed his view of the comics medium and what some of his favourites were. It's Steveâs turn to step into the confessional and get something off his chest in this episodeâs Guilty Pleasure, but this isnât one that will go down easy and we discuss it in depth.Rounding out the episode is our Hidden Gem and this episode it is a movie that perfectly fits the segment, it was given a limited release, Scott had not even heard of it before Steve recently recommended it and we talk about the awesomeness that is In Bruges and why you need to go out and buy it this Christmas. The Secret Quotation competition has been extended to the end of September. This is because one of the five episodes needed to get one of the answers was delayed, so to make it a bit more fair, and to give people some time to listen to all, weâve extended it. You need to send all five quotes, plus the name of the film that they come from to secretquotation@gmail.com More information about the competition and which episodes you need to listen to can be found at UK Comics Podcast Secret Quotation Page If you want to get in touch about anything we talk about on this show, then you can email us at comicbookoutsiders@hotmail.com or you can now email individually to steve@comicbookoutsiders.com or scott@comicbookoutsiders.com or you can visit us on our myspace or facebook pages, or leave an iTunes review or a comment on the libsyn page.
