Windows Live Messenger Not Remembering Your Email?

Published: 2009-10-16 06:43:56

Windows Live Messenger keeps getting fancier, the latest version has visual customization incorporated at every possible location in your messenger window almost as if it’s target audience is for pre-teens, personally I prefer the previous version, and if you share similar perspective  you can stick with the older version without the messenger ruthlessly forcing you to update. Well, there seems to be quite a common glitch (Microsoft product, who would have thought) with the software as well, where it fails to remember your username and/or password for some reason. Well times are hard with the recession and having to type your email address each time you need to login to your messenger can get unmanageably overwhelming…right? Well, Jonathan Kay, who somehow thinks it’s cool to call himself the “MessengerGeek” has developed a tiny application that fixes this issue, however MakeMessengerRemember runs on the not so tiny 2xMB .NET Framework which you will also need to install to run the application, upon execution you simply need to click ‘Fix’ after which your computer reboots and voila! your credentials should stick again. Before you return to this post and start bitching (’this is a scam’, best answer, don’t we love Yahoo! answers, jeez.) about the “The application failed to initialize properly” error, please refer to the bold section in the paragraph above and make sure you have done that as well. How to Schedule a Computer Shutdown

Published: 2009-10-11 02:28:38

Do you need to shutdown your computer at a specific time? You might need to do this for a number of reasons, an ideal situation maybe you are downloading a file overnight and you sleep 12 hours a day (because, maybe you are unemployed) but you are pretty sure the file you are downloading would be done in a few hours the most and you probably want to save electricity (because you are unemployed, remember?), many software that requires a lot of time have features to shutdown your computer once the function is complete. In the downloading example, software like uTorrent allow you to automatically turn off your computer once downloads are complete, however most developers aren’t really that thoughtful so you’d be stuck with shutting down your computer manually, or not. Shutdown Monster (lame I know) is an open source software that lets you schedule your computer to shutdown based on a preset time. You can also assign it to recurringly turn off on a particular day at a specific time. Be sure to suggest any similar apps in the comments and also provide your feedback on Shutdown Monster. How to Open RAR Files

Published: 2009-09-28 04:39:28

RAR files have become increasingly common in terms of compressed files that it has almost become second nature, specially in illegal online file sharing networks and also several webmasters today share any personal downloadable files on their websites in RAR formats today because of their sheer compression capabilities over the traditional, standard (matter of factly named) ZIP files. Unfortunately, files available in RAR formats for download aren’t usually supported with any relevant documentation as to how to open them and most operating systems don’t have native handlers for RAR files so noobs (like you) are absolutely foiled (or maybe not) because they cannot open that porno or cracked software file they downloaded. Fortunately the solution isn’t really a big deal. Install a free app and just like that all RAR files can be extracted and viewed. RAR files are the native file format of the best compression tool (feel free to argue below), WinRAR and thus if you are looking to open RAR files, it is ideal to use WinRAR to handle RAR files on your computer. While WinRAR is shareware, the developer has done a poor job of restricting use beyond the trial period other than a nag screen when you run the program that asks you to buy it, click ‘close’ and it humbly obeys (unlike other similar nag screens that frustrate the shit out of you by disabling all features for 5 minutes displaying a menacing countdown timer as well until the time passes). WinRAR is available for Windows, Mac, Linux and Pocket PC (the pocket PC version is free and the MAC and Linux versions are command line only). It also supports a zillion languages so if you speak a language only a dozen people in the World speak and you are using Google’s (pathetic) translator WinRAR should support your language too. Other Alternatives WinRAR as mentioned above is pretty much your best best if you are looking to open RAR files, but if you are feeling bold for some reason you could try alternative software as listed below or if someone told you installing too many software would make your computer implode and you were retarded enough to believe that you could try a web based application to handle your RAR files too (see below). 7-Zip 7-Zip is a popular, open source alternative that allows extracting only of RAR files, works on Windows operating systems with unofficial Mac and Linux versions available as well. PeaZip PeaZip is another free archiving tool that allows extraction of RAR files, supports Windows and Linux operating systems. OpenRarFile.com This website is a web based RAR handler (as the domain name suggests obviously) that lets you extract as well as create RAR files. It goes unsaid that this is a cross-platform free solution. Any other tools that you would personally recommend to open RAR files would be appreciated in the comments. How to Permanently Delete a File

Published: 2009-09-03 01:49:41

Windows provides a nifty feature to easily and quickly delete any files, but is it, really? A while back I posted on how you can recover your deleted files, a  few days back I gave you a list of 10 applications that lets you recover deleted files, which means deleted files aren’t really gone for good after all. Sometimes you might want to delete sensitive personal documents or any other file and your files aren’t really gone for good just with a shift+delete. Image Credit Usually, deleting a file only partially deletes certain data from a file which makes the file ‘apparently’ deleted, the above posts share applications that make use of this method of deleting files to recover them easily. There are applications developed to workaround this life saver if you accidentally delete an important file flaw in deletion though, these applications are typically known as ’shredders’ and software indexes are flooded with them. Shredders replace the actual data with random binary data and thus they cannot be recovered. File Shredder (windows) is a free application that ’shreds’ your files, while it couldn’t get more boring with such a matter of fact file name it does quite a good job at ’scrambling’ your file and then deleting it with little hope of being recovered, using standard file recovery software at least. Another great free alternative you might want to check out is AbsoluteShield File Shredder. While I was referring to Windows in the above example, this recoverability exists in other operating systems as well, for Mac there is ShredIt X which is a similar app for mac however it is shareware. For linux you can refer to this tutorial on linux.com on how to shred files. There are other methods and applications to shred files, if you are aware of any alternatives you use, feel free to share them in the comments. Related posts:Accidentally Permanently Deleted a File? Modes of Data Transmission

Published: 2009-09-02 03:43:16

Talking about data transmission can get confusing sometimes, we talk of types, modes, ways, these terms maybe synonymous to each other however they do have very distinct differences and cover different aspects of data transfer, I recently covered ‘types’ of data transmission in a network, which consists of how they maybe transferred, serially or in parallel, modes are pretty much ‘rules’ of the versatility of how data can be transmitted. Data can be transferred in 3 different modes, these 3 modes are equally popular and used in common everyday situations. Simplex If data can only be transferred in a single direction (one way) it is known as simplex. Television transmission is an example of Simplex transmission, here data can be transferred only to a television but no data can be transferred in the opposite direction. Duplex When data maybe transferred in two directions simultaneously it is known as Duplex, a simple telephone conversation would be an example, while we usually don’t talk simultaneously a telephone provides that ‘duplex’ functionality. Half-Duplex In this mode of transmission as well, data maybe transmitted in both directions, however it cannot be done simultaneously. A Walkie Talkie would be an example of this mode of transmission. The different modes are implemented based on their requirements, for example in Simplex transmission, two way transmission is not required in television transmission thus Simplex is used. How to Open WPS Files

Published: 2009-09-01 03:19:03

A WPS file is a document file type similar to the well known DOC type however with less formatting that DOC offers. WPS files aren’t really as common as the other standard document file types (doc, txt, rtf) however used in popular document applications like Microsoft Works. Thus you might encounter a WPS file and may not have a program associated with it. Today, fortunately much of the popular document readers support this file format however if you are using an older version of Microsoft Office, etc. the format may not be supported. Using Zamzar Zamzar is a multi format web based free converter which can convert your WPS files to other more popular word formats. Microsoft Works 6-9 File Converter This converter by Microsoft gives support to your current version of Microsoft word for opening and editing WPS files. Word Viewer A standalone application by Microsoft that lets you view (not edit) WPS files. OpenOffice The popular opensource office suite also fully supports viewing and modifying WPS files. There maybe other workarounds you know of available, if you are aware of any of them feedback in the comments would be appreciated below. Related posts:Still Outdated With Your Word Processor? 10 Tools to Recover Deleted Files

Published: 2009-08-31 01:01:50

I recently enlightened you on how you can recover your deleted files, well there are dozens of similar software tools (freeware and shareware) developed for this purpose however their performance may vary, below I’ve highlighted the top 10 tools which perform this function for this purpose based on how effective they are, price, operating system support and their overall popularity based on community feedback. Recuva (Windows) Recuva (freeware) is one of the most popular file recovery tools, from the same developers of the popular, reputed CCleaner, Recuva quickly searches files deleted and displays them with info on whether the file is ‘healthy’ enough to be recovered as well. The only issue with this program would be no Windows 7 support yet however it should be in the works. Glary Undelete (Windows) Glary Undelete is a free and easy-to-use yet powerful file undelete solution for FAT and NTFS file systems. It will bring back files emptied from the Recycle Bin, in a DOS window, from Windows Explorer with the SHIFT key held down. It will even recover files that have been deleted by bugs, crashes and viruses. The features are quite similar to Recuva and some of the other programs in this list. Support all operating systems except Windows 7. DiskDigger (Windows) DiskDigger (freeware) can recover files from any type of media that your computer can read. This includes USB flash drives, memory cards (SD, CompactFlash, Memory Stick, etc), and of course your hard drive. The types of files that it recovers include photos, videos, music, documents, and many other formats. It functions on all Windows operating systems except Windows 7. Pandora File Recovery (Windows) Pandora Recovery (freeware) allows you to find and recover recoverable deleted files from NTFS and FAT-formatted volumes, regardless of their type – you can recover pictures, songs, movies or documents. EASEUS Deleted File Recovery (Windows) EASEUS Deleted File Recovery is a fully functional freeware designed to recover deleted files from all types of media such as Hard Disk Drives, Floppy Drives, Smart Media, Compact Flash, Memory Sticks, and other types of removable media. PC Inspector File Recovery (Windows) PC Inspector File Recovery is a data recovery program that supports the FAT 12/16/32 and NTFS file systems. Works similar to the other alternatives listed however does not support Windows 7 or even Windows Vista. SoftPerfect File Recovery (Windows) SoftPerfect File Recovery is a free and useful tool to restore accidentally deleted files from hard and floppy disks, USB flash drives, CF and SD cards and other storage media. It supports the popular file systems such as FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS and NTFS5 with compression and encryption. Works on all Windows operating sytems except the latest Windows 7. PC Tools File Recover (Windows) File Recover allows you to recover critically important documents, or other files, which have been lost by accidental deletion. These files may be lost by emptying the Recycle Bin, or using other deletion actions that bypass the Recycle Bin altogether. Such actions include Windows® Shift-Delete, command line deletion, deleting excessively large files or using applications that delete files without the Recycle Bin. PC Tools File Recover is not freeware and will cost you approximately $43 however it is the only application that acknowledges Windows 7 support. Data Rescue II (Mac) While mainstream popular application types like media players and such are available in Mac, other less required applications like file recovery are hard to come by, however Data Rescue II is a file recovery application for Mac that lets you recover deleted files. Data Rescue II is not freeware and isn’t exactly economical as well (around $100) however if you require a file recovery tool for Mac, it should be the best alternative to go with. It is also compatible with the latest Snow Leopard. EASEUS Linux File Recovery This is a file recovery tool to recover linux files. It can recover your valuable data with its three function modules: Delete File Recovery, Complete Recovery, and Partition Recovery to retrieve your lost data from any kind of data disaster.
