Donal MacIntyre: Football Debt 23 Nov 08

Taxpayers are owed millions by indebted football clubs. This week the Donal MacIntyre programme reveals how over £25 million owed by football clubs to the Inland Revenue has been written off. Since 2000, 42 clubs in the Football League and the lower divisions have gone into administration. An examination of the tax debt in 18 cases showed that these clubs owed a total of more than £31 million - mainly in income tax and national insurance, but they will pay back only £3 million. As this is less than half of the clubs that have gone into administration, the actual debt owed to taxman will be higher. It is down to something called the football creditor's rule, which results in players and other clubs getting paid any owed monies first - and usually in full. Only once when these parties have been paid do Revenue and Customs share what's left with other non-football creditors. Usually, that means they only get up to 10% of what they are owed.
