WANTED - Common Interview

BlackTree TV personality and producer Jamie Duncan, sits down with Common to talk about his new movie WANTED. They talk about the importance of reading, his role as the GunSmith and will he ever stop rapping. Based upon Mark Millar's explosive graphic novel series and helmed by stunning visualist director Timur Bekmambetov—creator of the most successful Russian film franchise in history, the Night Watch series—Wanted tells the tale of one apathetic nobody's transformation into an unparalleled enforcer of justice. In 2008, the world will be introduced to a hero for a new generation: Wesley Gibson. 25-year-old Wes (James McAvoy) was the most disaffected, cube-dwelling drone the planet had ever known. His boss chewed him out hourly, his girlfriend ignored him routinely and his life plodded on interminably. Everyone was certain this disengaged slacker would amount to nothing. There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die in his slow, clock-punching rut. Until he met a woman named Fox (Angelina Jolie). After his estranged father is murdered, the deadly sexy Fox recruits Wes into the Fraternity, a secret society that trains Wes to avenge his dad's death by unlocking his dormant powers. As she teaches him how to develop lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, Wes discovers this team lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: carry out the death orders given by fate itself. With wickedly brilliant tutors—including the Fraternity's enigmatic leader, Sloan (Morgan Freeman)—Wes grows to enjoy all the strength he ever wanted. But, slowly, he begins to realize there is more to his dangerous associates than meets the eye. And as he wavers between newfound heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one could ever teach him: he alone controls his destiny.
BET Awards 2008 - JABBAWOCKEEZ on the Red Carpet

Beware of the Jabbawockeez my friends, the B-boys that rip, the freestylers that rock, Friend or foes, nobody knows these anomalies of hip hop. Beware of the beats that make them move their mesmerizing mysterious groove, boom boom kat, boom kat and just like that... vanished. The Jabbawockeez crew, established in 2003 was the result of a group of friends who wanted to showcase freestyle dance. It was a time when the "garage crew" no longer existed. The hip hop scene was flooded with "dance troupes" that seemed to "clone" dancers. There was no balance between, "dancing to music" and "dancing as artistic expression". Thus the birth of the Jabbawockeez crew. Each member came from different backgrounds both in dance and in life and offers to the collective, a variety of styles and perspectives. The idea of the Jabbawockee is the brainchild of Joseph Larot, Kevin Brewer and Phil Tayag also known as 3 Musky but the crew consisted of 5 other members who collaborated and created the "style" of the Jabbawockeez. The 8 original members are : Randy Bernal, Kevin Brewer, Ryan Ellis, Chris Gatdula, Gary Kendell, Joseph Larot, Rainen Paguio and Phil Tayag. Through the course of the last 5 years the members of the Jabbawockeez have shifted in number to a current total of 11 members. The added 4 members are: Ben Chung, Eddie Gutierrez, Saso Jimenez and Phi Nguyen. Initially, the Jabbawockeez made appearances at local showcases and club events in San Diego and Los Angeles. Their impact on the hip hop community has awarded them worldwide recognition. Some pioneers of hip hop such as Poppin' Pete, Mr. Wiggles and Crazy Legs to name a few, have offered their support of the Jabbawockeez crew. It is the mission of the Jabbawockeez to "inspire the world through music and dance" and gaining recognition from these pioneers is extremely important to the members and they feel blessed and honored to continue to carry the legacy of hip hop for the next generation to follow.
Incredible Hulk, Ed Norton and Tim Roth

An explosive new chapter in the Super Hero franchise that's captivated the world for more than 40 years will be released nationwide on Friday, June 13th. Universal Pictures and Marvel Studios bring the action-packed epic motion picture of one of the most captivating heroes of all time to a world that's been anxiously awaiting it — The Incredible Hulk. For decades, the brute strength and touching vulnerability of this character have captured the imagination in all of us who are unsure of how to manage the passions that lie buried within. While we try to keep our tensions in check, there is a creature that embraces the pure rage and limitless aggression—living inside one brilliant man who finds his alter ego more and more impossible to suppress. And you wouldn't like him when he's angry. We find scientist Bruce Banner (two-time Oscar® nominee Edward Norton, American History X, Primal Fear) desperately hunting for a cure to the gamma radiation that poisoned his cells and unleashes the unbridled force of rage within him: The Hulk. Banner has been living in the shadows—cut off from a life and the woman he loves, Dr. Elizabeth "Betty" Ross (Liv Tyler, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Strangers). Living as a fugitive to avoid the obsessive pursuit of his nemesis, General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (Oscar® winner William Hurt, Into the Wild, A History of Violence), he knows that a military machine seeking to capture him and brutally exploit his power is always only a few steps behind. As all three grapple with the secrets that led to The Hulk's creation, they are confronted with a vicious new adversary known as The Abomination, a monstrosity whose destructive strength exceeds even The Hulk's own. Portraying the human incarnation of this powerful creature is noted Academy Award® nominee Tim Roth (Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs). As Emil Blonsky, Roth imagines a Super Soldier whose lust for power manifests itself in The Abomination. And to defeat this nemesis, one scientist must make an agonizing final choice: accept a peaceful life as Bruce Banner or find heroism in the creature he holds inside — The Incredible Hulk. http://www.blacktree.tv

Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable, and man-made. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and maybe the world. Mutant victims of the plague--the Infected--lurk in the shadows...watching Neville's every move...waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind's last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But he knows he is outnumbered...and quickly running out of time. Warner Bros.
I AM LEGEND - Interview w/ Alice Braga

BlackTree TV Executive Producer Jamaal Finkley sits down with Alice Braga and discusses her new movie, I AM LEGEND. The discussion talks about filming in America as opposed to Brazil and who would she like to work with in the future. Alice Braga (born April 15, 1983 in Sao Paulo, Brazil) is a Brazilian actress. She has appeared in several films, most notably as Angelica in 2002's highly acclaimed City of God. She has been receiving critical acclaim and international recognition since her stirring performance in director Fernando Meirelles' Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated drama "City of God." The Brazillian-born Braga has become a fixture of her native country's cinema, with credits including "Solo Dios Sabe" ("God Only Knows"), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival; the offbeat comedy "Cheiro do Ralo, O" ("Drained"); and the love triangle drama "Cidade Baixa" ("Lower City"). Braga more recently captured Hollywood's attention with her performance in writer/director Eric Eason's "Journey to the End of the Night," opposite Brendan Fraser and Catalina Sandino Moreno. She also has a host of promising projects on the horizon. In Wayne Kramer's upcoming "Crossing Over," Braga joins Harrison Ford and Sean Penn in a story of immigrants' efforts to achieve U.S. citizenship. In 2008, she will be seen in David Mamet's "Redbelt," opposite Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tim Allen and Emily Mortimer, and in "Blindness," based on Jose Saramago's Nobel Prize-winning novel about a town mysteriously struck by blindness. The film, which reunites Braga with director Fernando Meirelles, also stars Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Danny Glover and Gael Garcia Bernal. Braga is currently filming "Repossession Mambo," starring opposite Jude Law and Forest Whitaker. The science fiction thriller, based on Eric Garcia's novel, is slated for release in 2009. I Am Legend is an upcoming 2007 American post-apocalyptic science fiction horror film directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Will Smith. It is the fourth film adaptation of Richard Matheson's 1954 novel I Am Legend, following The Last Man on Earth (1964), The Omega Man (1971) and the straight to video I Am Omega (2007). Smith plays Robert Neville, possibly Earth's only survivor of a man-made virus. He works to create a cure but is stalked by nocturnal mutant survivors of the plague.
Katt Williams and Charlie Murphy Interview - The Perfect Holiday

Brooke Christopher sits down with Katt Williams and Charlie Murphy to find out what would be their perfect holiday and whether or not Charlie Murphy could be the next president. The Perfect Holiday The first African American ensemble comedy for the Christmas season, The Perfect Holiday stars Gabrielle Union, Morris Chestnut, Queen Latifah, Terrence Howard, Malik Hammod, Charlie Murphy, Faizon Love, Jeremy Gumbs, Jill Marie Jones, and Rachel True. Katt Williams (Delicious) is a comedian known as much for his permed hair as for his animated performances and quick wit. At an age when most teenagers are eagerly anticipating getting their drivers licenses, the young comic quickly discovered that he had a gift for making people laugh. Inspired by the likes of great humorist such as Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby, George Carlin, Whoopi Goldberg, and Dave Chappelle (whom he calls the Malcolm X of comedy), Williams incomparably acerbic standup routines are laying the blueprint for a new generation of comics. Charles Q. Murphy (J-Jizzy) may be Eddie Murphy's older brother, but he has managed to sustain his own log career in the comedy world as well. He is perhaps best known for his hysterical appearances on the acclaimed Chappelle's Show, working alongside comedian Dave Chappelle. He has also appeared in the television series The Boondocks.
Kanye West Flashback... Before The Fame

We caught up with Kanye Before the Fame and Fortune when he was just getting ready for the release of his debut solo album. These are some classic never before seen clips of Kanye. Check it out. Donda West's plastic surgeon walks off 'Larry King Live' * Story Highlights * Dr. Jan Adams says family of Kanye West's mother "asked me not to go on" * Adams says he does not want to speak, removes his earpiece and leaves the set * Donda West died November 10, a day after cosmetic surgery * Preliminary reports: West may have died from complications from the surgery LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- The plastic surgeon who operated on hip-hop star Kanye West's mother the day before she died abruptly walked off the set of CNN's "Larry King Live" Tuesday, saying he was honoring a request from her family. "I want to thank you for this opportunity," Dr. Jan Adams told King. "Basically, I had come here to talk about things in the press that aren't accurate about me. "But I have a tremendous amount of love and respect for the West family. They asked me not to go on. And I've said from the very beginning, I don't have a side in this," Adams said. "They are my side, and I'm going to respect their wishes. I'm going to apologize to you because I think I'm taking up your air time, but I will not be on the show and I'm not going to discuss any of that. I'm going to honor their wishes." When King asked Adams if he would ever answer questions regarding the West case, he said, "I will talk with them," meaning her family. "When they are comfortable, then I will be comfortable. If they are never comfortable, then I will never be comfortable. They are what's important to me," Adams said. Asked whether he wanted to speak out, Adams said he did not, removed his earpiece and left the set. Earlier, as the show began, King said Adams had received a letter from West's family, saying that if Adams discussed West's case on the show, the family would ask the Medical Board of California to decertify him. Adams' brief appearance and walkout followed discussions with his attorney and "Larry King Live" producers. "To the extent there are issues about even why he's here, why this is in the media, it relates to the relationship he had with his patient," Alan Tenenbaum, one of West's attorneys, told King. "So until he gets clearance from the family, I don't think it would be fair or right for him to talk about these things."
RZA, Common & T.I discuss Why They Are "American Gangster"

RZA, Common, T.I discuss their recent film, American Gangster RZA is an American hip hop producer, rapper and actor. He is the de facto leader of the hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan, and was also a member of Gravediggaz. He has produced almost all of Wu-Tang Clan's albums as well as many Wu-Tang solo and affiliate projects. Lately he has gained more attention for his work in films, whether it be on screen or as a composer of original film scores. He has also released solo albums under the alter-ego Bobby Digital, which concerns himself only with the lawlessness of the male power fantasy, women, drugs, alcohol and shooting guns. RZA was born Robert Diggs in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York. After an impoverished childhood in a family of 11 children, RZA began his hip hop career in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a member of the trio Force of the Imperial Master (which subsequently became known as the All in Together Now Crew after they had a successful underground single of that name). The group consisted of future Wu-Tang members and his cousins GZA (then known as the Genius) and Ol' Dirty Bastard (then known, respectively, as Ason Unique, the Specialist, and the Professor). Once this acclaimed local band dissolved, both he and GZA attempted to kick start solo careers. With the help of GZA's friend Melquan (then owner of Jamaica Records) they both secured single deals with album options at successful labels, GZA going to Cold Chillin and RZA to Tommy Boy. GZA ultimately released the Words from the Genius album, but RZA's stint at Tommy Boy ended with only the EP Ooh I Love You Rakeem to show for it when he went to jail soon after its release. GZA's album flopped, and the two cousins became determined to conquer the hip hop industry on their own terms. Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr. (born March 13, 1972), better known by his stage name Common, is an American hip hop artist. Common debuted in 1992 with the album Can I Borrow A Dollar?, and maintained a significant underground following into the late 90s, after which he gained notable mainstream success through his work with the Soulquarians. His first major label album, Like Water for Chocolate, received widespread critical acclaim and moderate commercial success. Its popularity was matched by 2005's Be, which was nominated in the 2006 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album. Common has also started a burgeoning film career, starting with a role in the action thriller, Smokin' Aces, followed by a part in American Gangster. Clifford Joseph Harris, Jr. (born September 25, 1980), better known by his stage name T.I., and also by his alter ego T.I.P., is an American rapper, songwriter, actor, record and executive producer as well as the Co-CEO of Grand Hustle Records. Dee was born Ruby Ann Wallace in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Gladys Hightower and Marshall Edward Nathaniel Wallace, a cook, waiter, and porter. After her mother left the family, Dee's father remarried to Emma Amelia, a schoolteacher. Dee grew up in Harlem, New York. She graduated in 1945 from Hunter College with degrees in French and Spanish and is a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority, Inc. She made several appearances on Broadway before receiving national recognition for her role in the 1950 film The Jackie Robinson Story. Dee's career in acting has crossed all major forms of media over a span of eight decades, including the films A Raisin in the Sun, in which she recreated her stage role as a suffering housewife in the projects, and Edge of the City. She played both roles opposite Sidney Poitier. During the 1960s, Dee appeared in such politically charged films as Gone Are the Days and The Incident, which is recognized as helping pave the way for young African-American actors and filmmakers. She has been nominated for eight Emmy Awards, winning twice: once for her role in the 1990 TV film Decoration Day, and again for her television guest appearance in the China Beach episode, "Skylark". Her late husband Ossie Davis (1917-2005) also appeared in that episode. In 2007 the winner of the Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album was tied between (i) Dee and Ossie Davis for "With Ossie And Ruby: In This Life Together", and (ii) former President Jimmy Carter. Dee and Davis together wrote an autobiography in which they discuss their political activism as well as insights on their open marriage. Together they had three children; son, blues musician Guy Davis, and two daughters, Nora Day, and Hasna Muhammad. Dee has survived breast cancer for more than 30 years. Dee and Davis were well-known civil rights activists. Among others, Dee is a member of Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), the NAACP, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Dee and Davis were personal friends of both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, with Davis giving the eulogy at the latter's funeral in 1965.

Denzel tells how Frank Lucas became 'American Gangster'

Denzel Washington Interview Frank Lucas, once the city's biggest, baddest heroin kingpin the original O.G. in chinchilla, now seems like just a very likable guy. But don't be fooled. * By Mark Jacobson * Published Aug 14, 2000 During the early seventies, when for a sable-coat-wearing, Superfly-strutting instant of urban time he was perhaps the biggest heroin dealer in Harlem, Frank Lucas would sit at the corner of 116th Street and Eighth Avenue in a beat-up Chevrolet he called Nellybelle. Then living in a suite at the Regency Hotel with 100 custom-made, multi-hued suits in the closet, Lucas owned several cars. He had a Rolls, a Mercedes, a Corvette Sting Ray, and a 427 muscle job he'd once topped out at 160 mph near Exit 16E of the Jersey Turnpike, scaring himself so silly that he gave the car to his brother's wife just to get it out of his sight. But for "spying," Nellybelle was best. "Who'd think I'd be in a shit $300 car like that?" asks Lucas, who claims he'd clear up to $1 million a day selling dope on 116th Street. "One-sixteenth Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenue was mine. I bought it. I ran it. I owned it,"Lucas says. "When something is yours, you've got to be Johnny-on-the-spot, ready to take it to the top. So I'd sit in Nellybelle by the Roman Garden Bar, cap pulled down, with a fake beard, dark glasses, long wig . . . I'd be up beside people dealing my stuff, and no one knew who I was . . ." It was a matter of control and trust. As the leader of the heroin-dealing ring called the Country Boys, Lucas, older brother to Ezell, Vernon Lee, John Paul, Larry, and Leevan Lucas, was known for restricting his operation to blood relatives and others from his rural North Carolina area hometown. This was because, Lucas says, in his down-home creak of a voice, "a country boy, he ain't hip . . . he's not used to big cars, fancy ladies, and diamond rings. He'll be loyal to you. A country boy, you can give him any amount of money. His wife and kids might be hungry, and he'll never touch your stuff until he checks with you. City boys ain't like that. A city boy will take your last dime, look you in the face, and swear he ain't got it . . . You don't want a city boy -- the sonofabitch is just no good." Back in the early seventies, there were many "brands" of dope in Harlem. Tru Blu, Mean Machine, Could Be Fatal, Dick Down, Boody, Cooley High, Capone, Ding Dong, Fuck Me, Fuck You, Nice, Nice to Be Nice, Oh -- Can't Get Enough of That Funky Stuff, Tragic Magic, Gerber, The Judge, 32, 32-20, O.D., Correct, Official Correct, Past Due, Payback, Revenge, Green Tape, Red Tape, Rush, Swear to God, PraisePraisePraise, KillKillKill, Killer 1, Killer 2, KKK, Good Pussy, Taster's Choice, Harlem Hijack, Joint, Insured for Life, and Insured for Death were only a few of the brand names rubber-stamped onto cellophane bags. But none sold like Frank Lucas's Blue Magic. "That's because with Blue Magic, you could get 10 percent purity," Lucas asserts. "Any other, if you got 5 percent, you were doing good. We put it out there at four in the afternoon, when the cops changed shifts. That gave you a couple of hours before those lazy bastards got down there. My buyers, though, you could set your watch by them. By four o'clock, we had enough niggers in the street to make a Tarzan movie. They had to reroute the bus on Eighth Avenue. Call the Transit Department if it's not so. By nine o'clock, I ain't got a fucking gram. Everything is gone. Sold . . . and I got myself a million dollars." "I'd sit there in Nellybelle and watch the money roll in," says Frank Lucas of those near-forgotten days when Abe Beame lay his pint-size head upon the pillow at Gracie Mansion. "And no one even knew it was me. I was a shadow. A ghost. . . what we call down home a haint . . . That was me, the Haint of Harlem."

Jay-Z Interview, American Gangster

Jay-Z discusses the influences of the film, American Gangster, on his upcoming album, American Gangster. AMERICAN GANGSTER Cast: Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Josh Brolin, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Carla Gugino, John Hawkes, Ted Levine, RZA, T.I., Yul Vazquez Directed by: Ridley Scott Writer: Steve Zaillian Produced by: Brian Grazer Executive Producers: Nick Pileggi, Steve Zaillian, Branko Lustig, Karen Kehela Sherwood, James Whitaker, Michael Costigan Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Brian Grazer, Steve Zaillian and Ridley Scott team to tell the true juggernaut success story of a cult hero from the streets of 1970s Harlem in American Gangster. Nobody used to notice Frank Lucas (Oscar® winner Washington), the quiet driver to one of the inner city's leading black crime bosses. But when his boss suddenly dies, Frank exploits the opening in the power structure to build his own empire and create his own version of the American Dream. Through ingenuity and a strict business ethic, he comes to rule the inner-city drug trade, flooding the streets with a purer product at a better price. Lucas outplays all of the leading crime syndicates and becomes not only one of the city's mainline corrupters, but part of its circle of legit civic superstars. Richie Roberts (Oscar® winner Crowe) is an outcast cop close enough to the streets to feel a shift of control in the drug underworld. Roberts believes someone is climbing the rungs above the known Mafia families and starts to suspect that a black power player has come from nowhere to dominate the scene. Both Lucas and Roberts share a rigorous ethical code that sets them apart from their own colleagues, making them lone figures on opposite sides of the law. The destinies of these two men will become intertwined as they approach a confrontation where only one of them can come out on top. Washington (Training Day) and Crowe (Gladiator) lead a spectacular cast of accomplished and rising stars—including Josh Brolin, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Carla Gugino, T.I., RZA and John Ortiz—in this blistering tale of a true American entrepreneur directed by Oscar® nominee Ridley Scott (Gladiator) and produced by Academy Award® winner Brian Grazer (A Beautiful Mind) from a screenplay by Academy Award® winner Steve Zaillian (Schindler's List).

Monday Night Conversation with Jennifer Garner

Brooke Christopher sits down with Jennifer Garner to talk about her new movie, her new baby, broadway and her fighting skills. Jennifer Garner, who has catapulted into stardom with her lead role on the series "Alias" (2001), has come a long way from her birthplace of Houston, Texas. Her most recent move has been to Los Angeles, a decision that led to a role on the show "Felicity" (1998). She has appeared in numerous other television productions as well as such films as Elektra (2005), 13 Going on 30 (2004), Daredevil (2003), Pearl Harbor (2001) and Dude, Where's My Car? (2000). For her work, Garner has received four consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She has also received four Golden Globe nominations and won once, as well as received two Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, and won once. THE KINGDOM September 28, 2007 Genre: Thriller Cast: Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Chris Cooper, Jeremy Piven, Jason Bateman, Ali Suliman, Ashraf Barhoum Directed by: Peter Berg Screenplay by: Matthew Michael Carnahan Based on a Story by: Peter Berg & Matthew Michael Carnahan Produced by: Michael Mann, Scott Stuber Executive Producers: Mary Parent, John Cameron, Sarah Aubrey, Steve Saeta Director Peter Berg, who blisteringly reinterpreted the high-school sports drama with the celebrated Friday Night Lights, producer Michael Mann (Heat, The Insider, The Aviator, Miami Vice), and producer Scott Stuber (You, Me and Dupree, The Break-Up) join Oscar® winner Jamie Foxx in a timely thriller about the explosive clash that happens when Middle East meets West: The Kingdom. Foxx stars as whip-smart FBI Special Agent Ronald Fleury, who has just received the assignment of his career: assemble an elite team (played by Jennifer Garner, Oscar® winner Chris Cooper and Jason Bateman) and go to Riyadh to hunt down and capture the terrorist mastermind behind a deadly attack on Americans working in Saudi Arabia. The feds have only one week to infiltrate and cripple a cell bent on jihad to western society. No training could prepare Fleury and his team for the disorienting culture shock they face once inside this scorching foreign land—a byzantine maze of profiteering politicians and storefront terrorists. Bound by handlers who refuse to play ball with the U.S., the agents quickly find the local law enforcement more hindrance than help and soon grow uncertain of anybody's allegiance. But when a sympathetic Saudi police captain helps them navigate Riyadh politics and investigate the true cause of the attack, Fleury finds an unexpected comrade-in-arms. In their lightning fast attempt to crack the case, the partners' search leads them straight to the killers' front door. Now in a fight for their own lives, two teams on opposite sides of the war on terror won't stop until vengeance is found in The Kingdom.

Oscar® Award Winner, Grammy® Award Winner, Golden Globe Award Winner makes his first appearance on BlackTree TV to discuss Superhead on the Jamie Foxx radio show and airs out Big Tigger and the alleged "encounter" that he had with Tyson Beckford. One word: Grease!!! Jamie also talks about War and his new movie The Kingdom. Jamie's mother, Louise, was an adopted child. When her marriage to his father failed, his grandparents, Mark and Estelle Talley, stepped in and, at age 7 months, adopted him too. He says he had a very rigid upbringing that placed him in the Boy Scouts and the church choir. During high school, he played quarterback for his high school team and was good enough that he got press in Dallas newspapers. He studied music in college. He released a music album in 1994, "Peep This" and sings the theme song for his 1999 movie, Any Given Sunday (1999). However, in 1989, his life changed when a girl friend challenged him to get up onstage at the Comedy Club. In fact, he says he took his androgynous stage name because he learned that women got preference for mike time on open stage nights. That led to his being cast in "Roc" (1991) and "In Living Color" (1990) and ultimately to his own WB network TV series. He has a daughter, Corrine, born in 1995, who lives with her mother. RESURRECTING THE CHAMP Yari Film Group Presents A Phoenix Pictures, Battleplans Prods. Production A Rod Lurie Film Producers: Bob Yari, Marc Frydman, Rod Lurie Executive producers: Mike Medavoy, Arnold W. Messer, Bradlely J. Fischer, Louis Phillips, Frederick Zollo Director: Rod Lurie Screenwriters: Allison Burnett, Michael Bortman Based on an LA Times Magazine article by J.R. Moehringer Cast: Samuel L. Jackson (Champ), Josh Hartnett (Erik), Teri Hatcher (Flak), Kathryn Morris (Joyce), Rachel Nichols (Polly), Alan Alda (Metz), David Paymer (Whitley), Dakota Goya (Teddy), Peter Coyote (Epstein), Ryan McDonald (Kenny), Harry J. Lennix (Satterfield Jr.) Living on the streets of Denver, pushing a shopping cart piled high with all his worldly possessions, the man everyone calls "The Champ" (Samuel L. Jackson) knows he was not the greatest boxer to ever step in the ring, but at least he had a shot at it. After years of succumbing to fighters who ultimately found his glass jaw more often than he landed a winning punch, the Champ went from up-and-coming to mere has-been, with no heavyweight championship under his belt. Now he fights no one but cops and street thugs. Living in the shadow of his former self, this champ is down and halfway out. Denver Times sports reporter Erik Kernan (Josh Hartnett) knows the feeling. He's been living in the shadow of his famous father Erik the "Wow Man" Kernan ever since he too decided to be a journalist. Listening to tapes of his old man's lively radio broadcasts -- Erik is aware that he has some big journalistic shoes to fill. Assigned to cover all the bush-league sporting events, he wants a shot and the big time, but his hard-driving editor Metz (Alan Alda) is quick to tell Erik he's just not cutting it. "I forget your pieces while I'm reading them," Metz complains. "A lotta typing -- not much writing." Rapidly losing ground at work and at home -- his wife Joyce (Kathryn Morris) has asked for a separation -- Erik is afraid of becoming an absent father to his son Teddy (Dakota Goyo) just like his father was to him. He needs to make changes, to put heart back into his life and into his work . . . but how? One night after leaving the paper, as Erik sees a gang of thugs beating up a homeless man. He notices how well the grizzly old fellow can take a punch. He bobs, he weaves, he lands a few good ones himself until Erik chases the thugs away, leaving jeers of how they beat "The Champ" in their wake. Erik realizes he has just rescued the legendary "Battling Bob Satterfield" and stumbled on the story of a lifetime. But rumor had it Satterfield was dead . . . and yet here he was. An article about the rise, fall and resurrection of a former heavyweight contender could get Erik's career off the ropes and breathe life into his confidence. A story like this could be the title shot he has been waiting for a chance to change his life forever. BlackTreeTV Monday Night Conversation A BlackTree Media Production

Atlanta NAACP Officials, Others Say No Date: Thursday, August 23, 2007 By: Associated Press and BlackAmericaWeb.com Now that NFL quarterback Michael Vick has signaled his intentions to accept a plea agreement for his role in a dogfighting operation, the debate has turned from a question of Vick's guilt or innocence to whether his case is being handled fairly. The president of the NAACP's Atlanta chapter has said Vick should be allowed to return to the NFL, preferably to his team, the Atlanta Falcons, after serving his sentence for his role in the venture. "As a society, we should aid in his rehabilitation and welcome a new Michael Vick back into the community without a permanent loss of his career in football," said R.L. White, president of the group's Atlanta chapter. "We further ask the NFL, Falcons, and the sponsors not to permanently ban Mr. Vick from his ability to bring hours of enjoyment to fans all over this country." White said the Falcons quarterback made a mistake and should be allowed to prove he has learned from that mistake.
