The Book of SFX was a radio experiment and a live event every Thursday night on 90.3 WZBC in Newton, MA, and on wzbc.org. Using binaural microphones, the hosts collected sounds from public areas and private spaces, cut them up, and brought them into the studio each week, using a sampler to layer, loop and distort these microsounds (several seconds, fractions of seconds) into entirely new soundcapes. The result was the intersection between a fractured cinema verite for the ears and improvised electronic compositions that gravitated toward noise. The archived mp3s for this podcast are hosted on archive.org.
The final chapter in the Book. Late spring brings broken fans, walks in the activist-ridden park, motor vehicles clashing with nature, swings and hoops in the park, and more.
...MORETrips for fast food, overheard conversations, walking in tunnels, etc.
Starting strong and crisp, devolving into outdoor soundscapes and various resonance, the producers continue to hone their craft.
...MOREAnother favorite chapter in the Book series. We head down to the basement for some tearing, shredding, tapping skittering, brushing, and tomfoolery.
...MOREDomesticated life proves to be livelier than anticipated. Guest starring a frisky feline.
...MOREQuite possibly the most cacophonous of the chapters in the Book series, your hosts replay the last hour of Super Bowl XXXVIII featuring the New England Patriots against the Carolina Panthers. Audio was recorded in a downtown Boston bar over a one-hour period spanning the last two quarters of the game (which New England won), and the aftermath spilling into the streets and subways, then the best ten minutes or so was chopped into bits, looped, mixed, and re-presented over this one-hour production.
...MOREA new kind of chaotic experiment using something called Tessellation Structures, where a prototyped sampling program loops and mixes redundant sounds on its own.
...MOREDirectly following a fabled New England storm, the Book documents and mixes the mush and slush.
...MOREOne of our favorite episodes in the Book series. Soundwalks in the brisk New England winter accentuated with minimal looping.
