March 28th 2008: Rasta Jah Mao

On this the final day of our pilot series, two stories suggested by Fred 2 Baro and Tom Sparks fused to form one glorious song. Reggae star Mikey Dread passed away - he who introduced the Clash to Reggae and brought about a wonderful marriage of protest and rebel energy - and the story of Chairman Mao Tse Tung's millions, generated from his publishing exploits during his lifetime and still paying his heirs handsomely, which although dating from 2007 somehow surfaced once again today. Thanks to DFBMBE for sponsoring this week - all money goes to BuskAid. Thanks for all your terrific support for the last month! We'll be posting all the songs online for your purchase and download in the next few days, as well as the winning videos from our competition, so check back for updates.

Today's song is a symphony composed according to art principles which takes the subject of Barak Obama's and Hillary Clinton's ancestry as its theme. We made a lot of location recordings.. many of them are on Qik. This is the middle section of the symphony, scored for concertina, steel string acoustic guitar, cornet and bacon sandwich. This episode of Rise and Shine is sponsored by David Bailey (aka DFBMBE)

Donors accused of failing Afghans says this BBC headline. What can be said about the mistreatment of the vulnerable by the powerful? Take a deep breath and hang onto your conscience... This song is from the perspective of the man who has no choice but to leave his family and go and do violence, because it has become the only option for him to prevent his family starving. Thanks to Seth and Randell for their contributions. Remember that there is only 24 hours remaining to enter your video for the competition.

In the light of the spat between scientists and religious leaders, today's Rise and Shine *special holiday edition* deals with the issue of animal / human hybrids, cloning, embryology and the Catholic Church... just a light look at a key topic set in a future disco. Featuring Bertrand (Moox) from Seesmic on piano, and Louise Whitham (aka DJ Dolly available for parties, raves and poetry readings), today's Rise and Shine is sponsored by TotalPodcastrophe who met our return to work conditions after some negotiation - a model for industrial relations.
March 14th: Honey Thief

There can be only one story today: that of the bear criminalised by the Macedonian courts for honey-stealing. Zoran Kiseloski kept the bear away for a year with loud Serbian Turbo Folk music and bright lights, but eventually, his generator ran out of power and the bear returned to wreak havoc. Which inspired the epic dance track, Honey Thief. Today's Rise and Shine is sponsored by www.dothegreenthing.com - and by the way, if you like the song, please give to our good cause, Busk Aid (there's a Chip In widget on this very page...)

March 13th 2008: Sexy Underwear

Today's song is inspired by the French "sex for rent" scandal and the BBC headline, "France's sordid housing crisis." It's obvious that this awful practise is not limited to France - but in that country there is now a growing movement to expose it. Thanks to VinVin for providing us with some excellent French lyrics - we hope we did them justice. Today's Rise and Shine is sponsored by www.dothegreenthing.com

Today there is a 24 hour global protest against internet censorship. Did you know that some countries lock up bloggers? Reporters without Borders have organised this day of Cyber-Dissidence.
March 10th 2008: Hamster Fad

Today's song suggestion comes from regular Rise and Shine viewer / listener / contributor Langley. He found this article: Pet hamsters banned in Vietnam as well as news that the B-52s have reformed and made a new album. And so the song Hamster Fad, was born, a marriage of these two news items - an affectionate tribute to our favourite 80s-retro-50s band, as well as a sorry tale of pet obsession and state oppression.
