This week's Deadpod was suggested to me by a posting on a list server I belong to that claimed this show had "the best" Peggy O ever... now I'm not a believer in that sort of thing generally - too many wonderful versions of these songs to identify, in most cases, "the best" version of any of them.. but it did get me to pull this one out and give it a listen..I was pleased and hope you will be too .. 2nd set next week.. This week would have marked the 56th Birthday of Brent Mydland - so I decided to play something from the late 80s- a period where I really enjoy Brent's contributions. This week we're treated to the second set of October 2nd, 1977 from Portland OR. I think you'll find this to be a a real treat - a wonderful Samson kicks it off, followed by a nearly perfect Scarlet->Fire. I think you'll love what Garcia does here - especially in the transition! The Playin' that follows becomes gloriously out there - I think you'll find Phil is really taking the lead here and in the great jams that follow - the Truckin' and Other One are really fabulous examples of this era of the Dead at its best.. Grateful Dead Paramount Theatre Portland, OR 10/2/77 - SundaySamson And Delilah [6:31] ; Scarlet Begonias [8:57] > Fire On The Mountain [11:45] ; Funiculi Funicula [0:36] ; Playing In The Band [8:59] > Drums [6:02] > The Wheel [5:20] > Truckin' [8:53] > The Other One [7:18] > Wharf Rat [10:53] > Sugar Magnolia [8:50]Encore Johnny B. Goode [4:09]I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who made contributions during my pledge drive - once again I can only express my thanks and tell you that Deadheads are the kindest folks around.. I'll have those Egypt CD sets out to you as soon as I get them in from Rhino (and I'm back up and around).. speaking of up and around, there won't be a Deadpod next week - I have to get some surgery done on my leg next week and know I won't be back in time for next Friday's show.. sorry about that.. hopefully I'll feel up to it for the week of the 24th... I don't always get to play requests - but sometimes I can and this week I'm sharing a show that was recently requested - October 2nd, 1977. This is a fine performance - and a Betty board to boot. I think the fun they're having back on stage is clearly reflected in their playing. This is a fine recording of a fun show I think you'll enjoy. I need to take a moment to THANK everyone who contributed to the Deadpod last week!! Your support will be a huge help to keep us strong and to support our community radio station KOPN. I'm going to do my best to get those copies of 'Rockin' the Cradle' out to you as soon as I can. I have to wait to get them from Rhino, and I go in for surgery in a little over a week - so it might be a little while before they go out - so please be patient. I'll get them out to everyone! thanks again!!!It's not too late to make a donation - just click the button on the left hand side of the page! This week's Deadpod is big in every way - a wonderful second set that features a fabulous Eyes of the World->Estimated Prophet->Franklin's Tower that lasts nearly an hour and is among the best versions ever of these songs. This comes to us from the great fall of 79 tour, this one is from November 5th, 1979 from the Spectrum in Philadelphia. The entire set is a real treat, starting with a rare second set opening Althea and closing with a truly rocking Sailor-Saint-Sugar Magnolia.. Grateful Dead The Spectrum Philadelphia, PA 11/5/79 - MondayAlthea [12:01] ; Easy To Love You [3:26] ; Eyes Of The World [22:35] > Estimated Prophet [14:28] > Franklin's Tower [13:45] > Space [5:09] > Drums [7:36] > Space [2:39] > Lost Sailor [6:52] > Saint Of Circumstance [5:14] > Sugar Magnolia [8:46]Encore Casey Jones [5:50]You can listen to this weeks' Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod092608.mp3Not only is there alot of great music this week, but I took to heart a suggestion that I try to improve the compression rate on the mp3. Being just another picky deadhead myself, I'm very concerned to have the music sound as good as possible - please let me know if you notice the difference on this week's Deadpod. This does increase the file size, and there are tradeoffs, but it may well be worth the cost. The other big news this week is that starting next week, KOPN, 89.5 FM, Community radio begins its Fall pledge drive. I'm trying to get a head start on this by asking you for your support for the Deadpod. I do hope you'll consider contributing to the Deadpod and ensuring our continuance. I wanted to let you know this was starting this week because I have an opportunity to send you a very special thank you for supporting the Deadpod - a copy of the brand new release "Rocking the Cradle - Egypt 78" CD/DVD combination set that releases on September 30th! This two cd/dvd set chronicles the historic shows in Egypt in 1978 - including 95 minutes of concert footage - and I'm so happy to be able to offer this to my listeners who contribute at a $60 level or above. I wanted to get a headstart on this as I'm going to be getting some surgery done later in October and would like to take care of this before all that goes down.. so at any rate, if you'd like to get a copy of this wonderful set, just contribute to the Deadpod during this big membership drive. You can click the 'Make a Donation' button on the left hand side of the page here: http://deadshow.blogspot.comThank YOU! Whew! I hope the Deadpod and all the news isn't TOO big! but then again, I always loved the BIG sound of seeing the Dead and I think you'll enjoy this week's show.. Be well and thanks for picking us up!

While I only have the second set of this show, I think you'll agree that it's well worth your time. This show features a wonderful pre-Drums seven song segment that starts with a rousing China-Rider, then goes into a rare Stranger->Comes a Time sequeway. Always a favorite, the Comes A Time is blusey and very well played. The band then drives into Estimated into a wonderful He's Gone and a very unexpected Uncle John's Band before a short Drums and Space. The rest of the show is equally well-played - then they pull out a rare double encore to confirm they had as much fun as we do listening. I've had some requests for some solo Garcia, or Garcia band, and I thought this show, which I recently came across, would be an interesting contrast with the 1974 show that we heard the last couple weeks. This too, is from 1974, but this is Garcia with Merle Saunders, at the Keystone in Berkeley CA. It's a whole different sound than the 'Wall of Sound' and certainly shows Garcia's unique ability to stretch out and explore and improvise in a whole other musical realm.. This week's Deadpod goes back to the fabulous summer of 1974 - I think its clear from listening to this show that the band is really putting out some fabulous music. Those of you who follow the Deadpod know that I often prefer to play lesser known performances rather than very well known ones. There's often lots of surprises there to be heard - but there's nothing wrong with bringing out the well-known and loved dates sometimes either. This week I'm playing one of the those - this one a live "free concert" from the "hiatus" of 1975 - Sept. 28th, 1975 from Golden Gate Park. The difficulty here was in choosing between the sources - a very good audience or the existing soundboard. I went with the soundboard but with some reservations. The energy and playing of this performance are over the top - I hope you enjoy it!! Happy Birthday Jerry!I decided against the idea of doing a Jerry "tribute" - heck every Deadpod is a tribute to the virtuosity and spirit of Garcia - he should still be with us - he'd only be 66 today...........this week I'm playing set 2 of 9/2/79 - Enjoy the fabulous Weather Report Suite and Garcia's intense jam out of that.. I don't need to tell you to listen to the Stella Blue.. :) Grateful Dead Augusta Civic Center Augusta, ME 9/2/79 - Sunday Samson And Delilah [7:29] ; Ramble On Rose [8:13] ; Terrapin Station [12:58] > Let It Grow [11:50] > Jam (1) [11:#26] > Drums [5:25] > Space [4:28] > Stella Blue [10:53] > Truckin' (2) [8:17] > Around And Around [7:29#]You can listen to the Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod080108.mp3Be well during these 'days between' ....

Happy 4th of July!! Since this week's Deadpod falls on the 4th I decided to share a show that ranks up with some of the most memorable I ever attended - July 4th, 1990 at Sandstone Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, KS. Man was it ever *hot* - broiling - they had no ice at the venue.. I remember when certain substances kicked in and the sun was broiling us and we were giggling about that old frying pan commercial - "this is your brain on drugs"....... It was all worth it however when we were treated to this performance.. I'm bringing you the second set - which contains a fabulous Scarlet->Fire and a heart wrenching Stella Blue.. along with a rousing US Blues encore.. I hope you enjoy it!Grateful DeadSandstone Amphitheatre Bonner Springs, KS 7/4/90 - Wednesday Two Victim Or The Crime > Foolish Heart > Just A Little Light > Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain > Drums > Space > The Wheel > Gimme Some Lovin' > Stella Blue > Sugar MagnoliaEncore U.S. BluesYou can listen to the Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod070408.mp3

This week we get to listen to the second set of the Dead's performance on 10/20/78 at Winterland in San Francisco. I don't think there's really any throw-away tunes in this set - from the opening Half-Step->Franklins, to the exploratory(!) Dancin' In the Streets this is really classic, Good 'ol Grateful Dead. The double encore, Johnny B Goode and Shakedown Street, just puts the band's own exclamation mark on this performance.. Enjoy. This week I'm bringing you a show that really showcases, I think, what Brent Mydland brought to the band - in honor of the 18th anniversary of his last show with the Grateful Dead which occurred this week. This show, 9/2/79, is one of those Fall '79 shows where Brent really was out front and his playing was so spirited that I'm sure he inspired everyone else.. This week the first set, next week the conclusion.. I hope you enjoy it!! This week we have one of those great shows from 1971 - for a long time the only soundboard in circulation of this show only contained three songs - but luckily for us this has now surfaced and we have the pleasure of listening to this entire show.. I'll play the second set next week, but there's plenty to chew on here - notice of course the very last 'Easy Wind', and a fabulous 'Me & Bobby McGee'... This week we get to hear the rest of that fine 1st set - and the entire 2nd set - from the classic performance of 5/4/77 at the Palladium in NYC., NY. The first set ends with a fine and very well played Dancin' In the Streets, but the real meat of this show is the 2nd set, in my opinion. Here we have a monsterous 45 minute Terrapin->Playin'->Comes a Time->Playin that just will blow your socks off. When the band finishes the Playin' reprise, the house lights come up and the show is over - there's nothing else they can add.. and I don't think anyone was complaining.. I think you'll agree.... Grateful Dead The Palladium New York, NY 5/4/77 - Wednesdayend of set 1: Looks Like Rain [8:16] ; Brown Eyed Women [5:05] ; Dancing In The Street [17:56]Two Estimated Prophet [8:14] ; Scarlet Begonias [9:15] > Fire On The Mountain [11:06] ; Terrapin Station [9:40] > Playing In The Band [18:#12] > Comes A Time [10:52] > Playing In The Band [8:06]You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod061308.mp3Enjoy! :)

This week the conclusion of Bruce Hornsby's first show as a member of the band, 9/15/90 at Madison Square Garden. I think you'll especially enjoy the first half of this set which I find exceptionally well-played and tight throughout. You'll also want to listen to the only post-Brent 'Gimme Some Lovin' with Hornsby - very tasty stuff. The crowd really feeds the band on this one and its obvious throughout. Hello friends ! I've had a longstanding request to play a Bruce Hornsby show and while this *is* an atypical one, nevertheless its a good one.. his very first show with the Dead, 9/15/90 from Madison Square Garden in New York. We'll play the first set this week, and I think you'll agree its loaded with energy. Jerry really enjoyed playing with Bruce right from the start as is evident in this recording.. Somehow the month of May slipped by without my having posted something from that unbelievable month in GD history. I'm going to make up for that this week and next with this fat show from the GD archives. I'll include the missing songs in next week's Deadpod. I do hope you enjoy this week's selection - I'll bring you the second set next week. This week we have the pleasure of listening to the second set of 8/29/80 from the Spectrum in Philadelphia PA. This is a tight and rockin' second set, the boys start with an excellent greatest story into Althea. Then a wonderful version of Let It Grow goes into He's Gone.. I'm sure you'll notice Phil and Brent's contributions on this one.. after space and drums, the band goes into a marvelous Wharf Rat, then back into the rockin' grove with Goin' Down the Road, Around & Around and Johnny B. Goode. While this may not be the most cosmic Dead show around, it certain is a fun, rockin' time.. This week we have a great new soundboard of a show from a year that's often under appreciated - 1980. This comes to us from August 29th, 1980, when the boys played the Spectrum in Philladelphia. The first set, which we'll hear this week, starts off with a rockin' Alabama Getaway->Promised Land opener. The band proceeds to play a really high energy twelve song first set, nicely played and sounding like they were really listening to one another. Brent fits in very nicely here, as he's really found his spot by now. I really enjoy the Big River, and Row Jimmy, and check out the crazy set closing Deal!!! This week marks the start of KOPN's spring pledge drive, so I am asking for your help in allowing our community radio station, and this podcast, to remain on the air. Any contribution, no matter what, will help to keep us going. I'm working on securing some CDs to use as premiums to thank you for your support, and will announce them when and if they're finalized. But in the meantime, I hope you'll consider clicking on the contribute now button and helping us out with your contribution. This week we get to savor a truly outstanding audience recording of one of the best shows of the early 1980s - October 10th, 1982 at the Frost Ampitheater in Palo Alto CA.The band comes charging out right from the gate, with of all things, a mad "Minglewood Blues" that will blow you away. However this version really stands up and I hope you enjoy it.. thanks!!!

I've had a request for this show for almost a year and for one reason or another never got around to playing it.. but some recent requests for Pigpen and a stroke of good fortune caused me not to overlook it any longer.. This piece of primal Dead has some wonderful versions of some classic early songs; I particularly like the Pigpen numbers and 'Sittin On Top of the World'.. 'Doin' That Rag' is always a favorite of mine as well. This week we listen to the second set from September 21st, 1973 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. This set starts with the last version of a song that I happen to really like, "Let Me Sing Your Blues Away", but when you hear it you can understand why it got dropped.. the rest of the set is much better however, and the addition of Joe Ellis and Martin Fierro on trumpet and sax respectively is amazing. I think you'll agree that the horns add a unique and lovely element to the arrangement on these songs. Hello Friends! This week we'll listen to the conclusion of the Dead's show at Alpine Valley on August 8th, 1982. I think you'll really enjoy the wonderful Scarlet Begonias, the crazy drums with guest Zakir Hussein, as well as John Cipollina's guest guitar work on "The Other One", "Wharf Rat" and "Not Fade Away". Check out the crazy version of Satisfaction as well.. Whew! :) Just a note, my computer that I usually use to put together the show fried its motherboard this week - I had to use a different one to get the Deadpod together - if you notice any problems please let me know. This week we get a nice recording of a wonderful early 80's show - this one comes to us from Alpine Valley, August the 8th, 1982. This week we'll hear the first set (and the opener of the 2nd), next week we'll finish up the show.. I really enjoyed the Alabama Getaway openers of this period and this is no exception. I also think you'll like the Little Red Rooster, Looks Like Rain and Peggy-O in this first set for sure. Samson and Delilah close out the set in an unusual position for this song, but one that works well. There are a few flubs and recording problems - the Loser is cut at the beginning unfortunately - but nevertheless an enjoyable listen, I think.Grateful Dead Alpine Valley Music Theatre East Troy, WI8/8/82 - Sunday One Alabama Getaway [4:47] > The Promised Land [4:27] ; They Love Each Other [8:18] ; Mama Tried [2:44] > Mexicali Blues [5:02] ; Loser [#4:33] ; Little Red Rooster [7:49] ; Brown Eyed Women [5:25] > Looks Like Rain [8:26] ; Peggy-O [7:06] ; Samson And Delilah [7:47]Two Far From MeYou can listen to the Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod031408.mp3Be well friends and thanks for your support..

This week I have an excellent show from 1989 for your listening pleasure - we'll be hearing the first part of August 6th, 1989 from Cal Expo. The show starts with a 'Let the Good Times Roll' that the band ends perfectly and rolls into 'Feel Like a Stranger' and then Franklin's Tower.. A very interesting and well played start to a wonderful show. I really enjoy this first part of the show - highlighted by Garcia's singing on Ramble on Rose and a great version of Birdsong. This week is a very special Deadpod, as it marks the start of our Winter pledge drive for our community radio station, KOPN 89.5 FM as well as for the Deadpod. Musically, we'll continue where we left off last week - we'll be listening to most of the second set from RFK Stadium, June 10th, 1973. This is truly classic Grateful Dead - Eyes of the World into Stella Blue, a Big River, Here Comes Sunshine and a great Dark Star are some of the highlights of this fantastic set.. In the second part of the Deadpod I talk to Gary McKinney, musician, and author of a new novel, Slipknot, a murder mystery whose main character, Sheriff Gavin Pruitt, is a Deadhead. The novel explores his philosophy -influcenced by the band of course, and a classic confrontation of self interest verses the environment.. Best of all I have ten copies of Slipknot to send out to anyone interested in reading this great novel who makes a contribution to the Deadpod of $20 or more. Just drop me a note and I'll gladly send you a copy - this is a really fun read and I know you'll enjoy it.. (You can find Slipknot on Amazon.com or at http://Kearneystreetbooks.com)Other premiums for this drive include five copies of Donna Jean and the Tricksters new cd, and five concert CDs from Ratdog's summer tour.. I'm also hoping to get at least five copies of the brand new GD cd, Road Trips vol. 2 which features performances from the fall of 1977. If you're interested in these as a premium for your contribution of $50 or more just drop me a note and I'll let you know what I have available.. I really count on and value your contributions and want to thank you in advance for your consideration and your support.. This week I'm trying something crazy - this week's Deadpod is an entire, complete show from 1976. This is a *huge* file folks, and I hope that you are all able to listen to this and enjoy this really unique show. I'm doing this as a favor to one of the friends of the Deadpod who is running in this weekend's NYC Marathon, and hoped to get to hear a complete show. I've also had requests for a mid-70s show and a 'help->slip->Franklin's'.. well this show has an epic Franklin's so I really hope that all of you have the time and bandwidth to hear it all.. Thanks for your understanding and we'll see how this one goes - I couldn't possibly post something this large every week, but what the hell, let's see how it goes!! This week we'll hear the remainder of the great show from June 26th, 1984 from the Merriweather Post Pavilion. This set shows us the great interplay of light and dark in the Dead's music - songs I really love like Don't Need Love, He's Gone and Stella Blue are interspersed with rocking numbers like Wang Dang Doodle, Good Lovin' and Around and Around. There's even a 'Day Job' encore - it had been long enough that I'd heard one of these that I enjoyed it ;) I hope you'll enjoy this great set too.. I also want to sincerely thank those of you who've contributed during our Fall fundraising drive. It's not too late to join with these great friends who've contributed to keep the Deadpod coming each week - just click on the 'contribute now' button on the right hand side of the blog... I'm also working on getting more copies of Three from the Vault for those of you who contribute $50 or more and let me know you'd like a copy! Thanks SO much !!! It took me a bit to decide what to bring you this week, but after I ran across this show I knew it was the right choice.. This is one of those classic live Dead sets from 1969, this one comes from Boulder CO, April 13th. It features everything you\'d expect - great Pigpen raps, wild, far-out jamming and some magnificent moments from Garcia - most notably on the Dark Star and the Eleven. Personally, I\'m always blown away by a really well-played and heartfelt Death Don\'t Have No Mercy - it ends the set I\'m bringing you this week. I hope you enjoy it... (note there are some anomalies - Lovelight cuts early, Doin\' that Rag is cut at the start and the Dark Star has a splice.. still I think the outstanding quality more than makes up for them.... )Grateful Dead Ballroom - University of Colorado Boulder, CODate 4/13/69 - Sunday One [1:45:18 +] Turn On Your Love Light [24:55#] % Doin\' That Rag [#4:18] ; [0:45] ; Good Morning Little Schoolgirl [8:09] ; [1:05] ; Morning Dew [11:02] [0:14] % Dark Star [24:01] > St. Stephen [7:50] > The Eleven [13:02] > Death Don\'t Have No Mercy [9:55] As always you can listen to this week\'s Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod092807.mp3

First off a sincere thank you to all of you who passed along your warm and kind get well wishes to me this week. I was in the hospital because I had an aneurysm in my leg that blocked the blood flow pretty completely. They did a vein graft in there and while I'm still pretty gimpy, at least I'm not in the hospital so I'm thankful for that. I wanted to get a show up this week, and I think you'll enjoy this one, which was just recently released in a complete form...Grateful Dead Cincinnati Gardens Cincinnati, OHDate 12/4/73 - Tuesday One Johnny B. Hello Friends! An extra deadpod this week - this is an interview that I had with Lee Johnson, Conductor and composer of Dead Symphony #6. Mr. Johnson talks about the process of bringing the Grateful Dead into the classical world and about why he thought their work merited being made into a symphony. I've provided several musical samples of the work as well, so you can hear just what a great job he did on this project. Here's a real treat from 1969.. this show starts with a great acoustic set, occasioned, says Jerry, because Billy has been delayed on his way there.. this week I'm bringing you both the acoustic and electric set (I've had to remove a couple of songs who were just cut too badly to broadcast). While there are several unfortunate cuts, I'm sure you're going to enjoy this beautiful and sometimes raucous, performance.
